I almost picked a couple of the bullion French coins up when I was in Paris last month, but I didn't know the silver weights of them. Some are pretty cool, I like the last ones you pictured, I forget what they're called.

Re: Old French Silver Coins

I collect the Morgan sized French 5 Francs from the 19th century - 90% silver and reasonably cheap for numismatics.

I also have some of the 1960s 10 and 50 Francs struck in 90% silver, nice and cheap for silver investing.

What is the silver content of the 1930s 20 Francs?

All of my very limited collection of French coins are gold, a couple Lucky Angels and several "Merci de franc" euro denominated coins. I see that the "sower" is a concept that repeats on French coins.

I have an aluminum Vichy coin I bought for ten cents that gives me more delight than all my Herakles silver bullion coins combined.

http://i15.ebayimg.com/03/i/000/a4/f8/971a_1.JPG
from a bbc article about the franc:

Quote:

The coins also changed, adopting the emblem of the Vichy regime and the words "travail, famille, patrie" (work, family, fatherland).
... and also they said "Etat Francaise" not French Republic

there are important differences here-- the contrast is from blood and soil and organic relations-- patriotic and nationalistic traditional organic values vs the republican ideas of secular brotherhood and individualism, etc "liberte, fraternite, egalite"

these are neither rare nor valuable. but they are considerably more rare than the republic francs. still they are only worth a quarter or so. acc to the krause book. which, you should get if you are into international coins

I've got 10 - 20 Franc GOLD French coins from

1810-1813 Napoleon coins. I'm going to send them
in to NGC for grading ALL "about EF" - and sell them on EBAY
someday.

Got 'em rather cheap in 1997 or so.

Clinton-Rubin-Summers years of Gibson's Paradox and cheap gold.

HistoryStudent are your coins (Napoleon Empereur) or R thay Napoleon I II III
Like that. There is one gold coin that was produced during the reign of Napoleon I and its an extremely rare 20 francs goldy, minted in Nantes, I think it was the 1812 or 1813

I could not find my Krause, but i found something interesting about the AH-1370 100 franc its a major rarity, Krause says that 10 million of these coins were minted but nearly all were melted. Today, only 100 are known, All of the coins are easily identified as coinage of the French Moroccan period by the presence of either the legend Empire Cherifien or the legend Maroc. All of the coins will have one or the other legend, and often both. All of the coins will also have either a five-pointed star or a Star of David and sometimes both.

Belgium was part of the Latin monetary union too, so your coin should be pretty exactly 10g!

well 10 grams would be about a third of an ounce which would suck. or en francais "ca serait mal" It feels and hefts and looks like a US silver dollar, which is 3/4 troy ounce.

You would never believe what happened last night, I and my friend went out coin hunting, a place we had been before one year ago, we never struck anything at this darn place, ok so he stops by my house and says letts go just for the good times, this was by a rocky sea where the romans once occupied that part of the land. It just took us 3 hours until my metal detector started to make a high pitch tone, it almost blew me ear hole out, i think it needs adjusting, Well i found 46 Silver Coins just right under a big flat rock that had a long hole in the ground, in it was a wooden box that was eaten up by god knows what, i was so happy i started yelling at my friend bingo bingo, my friend ran so fast he fell like 14 times on his way over, that was the funniest glimpseit, heheheheh i was counting his falls :D , So we stoped looking and went back home, out of the 46 i gave him 23, i picked first hehehe, well here are the coins i found, untell now i only found two that has very very good value, Not bad for 3 hours, we are going to camp there for a week starting by thursday. Wish me good luck on my next coin hunting. :D

Sorry but I can come closer to designing a nuclear reactor than identifying old French coins. I know the gold Lucky Angel and that's it.
